Every iconic brand has an origin story. Your top fashion lines that may have dominated department stores and celebrity closets have all had to start somewhere. While launching your own clothing line is challenging, thanks to online marketing and e-commerce, it just might be possible to turn a brand that began in a small online store into a clothing brand that’s beloved worldwide.
1. MAKE YOR FIRST DECISION
This will be the foundation for everything that you are going to do with your business. This is going to involve the type of fashion business you create, the customer you will be serving, the type of clothing you will be designing and so much more. Make the decision on what you’re actually wanting to do and what you’re going to do, this needs to be figured out before waisting your time on anything else.
2. ESTABLISH YOUR MINDSET
Your ability to grow your fashion business starts with believing in yourself. The two most important things to establish is patience and confidence. Having patience will help you to understand that things do not always happen over night or as planned. In the fashion industry things aren’t always going to go the way you imagined and things won’t always be completed in a timely manner so establishing the patience early in your mindset will help with unplanned anxieties. Having the confidence to believe that you are completely capable and deserving of all that you want to accomplish is your first key to success in fashion. Remember this and never forget it “You can and you will”.
3. CREATE A BUSINESS PLAN
You’re either the type that wants to have it all figured out immediately or the type that just want your ideas transferred from your brain to a piece of paper. Thankfully most people are successful starting off with just getting their ideas on paper and then investing in more in-depth research and financials projections. It’s okay to not have everything figured out immediatly which will bring us back to step two on having patience. Creating your business plan involves your mission, target audience, your product or service, and basic information about your company’s finicial strategy.
4. COME UP WITH A NAME
Oh you thought this was the first thing you were suppose to do? Most people think this but really you should have step 1-3 established before even coming up with a name. Coming up with a name can be difficult especially if your goal is to stand out or to be catchy but this also the fun part of starting your fashion business. Creating a name becomes easier when you have a foundation of what your business is, who you’re serving and your overall plan. The best way to do this is to first right down all the names that first come to your mind and also jot down names of other similar companies to get an overall idea of what direction you’re heading in for the name. A good tip is to pick a name that sounds good coming out of someones mouth and something that you actually like as this will be stuck with you throughout the growth of your company.
5. CREATE A LOGO
Your logo actually plays the biggest role in your business so its important to take your time with this step as everything you plan to do from here on out will feature this logo. Now that you have done all your research and have established a name it’s time to find the logo that best suit the name and the company. Make a list of where your logo is going to be used, this includes websites, the placement location on clothing, packaging, marketing and more. A lot of fashion brands have more than one logo, a pendant and a typeface logo. You are going to want to sketch a variety of logo concepts so you’ll have options to chose from rather than sticking with the first thing that comes to mind. You ever created a username quickly on social media and then you realized you actually hate it? This is the same concept with a logo but only its more serious. You want to chose a name that is professional and a name that can be used throughout the growth of your business.
